Big Updates: Wave Motion is going to space

Since our last update nearly two months ago, we have been busy building, testing, validating, and filling out paperwork. So busy we haven’t really been updating anyone, especially our own blog. Since all press is good press, here’s a not-so-quick rundown of what exactly we’ve achieved since our last post (apologies, long list incoming):

• Successfully test fired the Big Iron demonstration launcher a total of half a dozen times

• Built and successfully tested a sabot design that survives the launch process

• Fired sabots at supersonic velocities

• Received approval from the Bureau of Land Management to conduct test launches from the Black Rock Desert Special Rocket Launch area

• Gotten FAA approval to launch to altitudes of up to 50 miles (USAF definition of space)

• Completed the NSF I-Corps program making many good contacts in the NewSpace industry and WA State government, winning a $2500 award

• Constructed and tested a flight computer system from off the shelf components that survives the acceleration of launch

The Wave Motion Launch team is now in a position to launch a projectile to near-space altitudes! We will continue development work on our flight vehicle prototypes, testing and planning for a launch to 50 miles in early October of this year! We will continue to post significant updates when they happen, and hopefully soon we’ll see you from space!
